AI automation for solo and small law firms

AI automation for solo attorneys and small firms: intake, conflict-check prep, first drafts from your templates and deadline reminders, set up around your duty of confidentiality.

In a small firm, the attorney is often also the intake desk, the calendar clerk and the document assembler. I help you take the routine paperwork off your plate while keeping client information protected and a lawyer signing off on everything that matters.

What I set up

Confidentiality and bar rules

ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024), Oregon State Bar Formal Opinion 2025-205 and WSBA Advisory Opinion 202505 all say the same basic things: understand the tool, protect client information, check the output, supervise staff and the tool, and bill fairly. In practice that means business-grade tools with contract terms that keep your data private, no client information in self-learning consumer tools without informed consent, and a lawyer reviewing every draft. I’m not a lawyer and I don’t give legal advice. You make the ethics calls; I build the setup to match them.

How it works

  1. Process audit. I sit with the people who do the work, map where the hours go, and rank the tasks worth automating. You get a short written plan. Small offices can start with the half-day starter instead.
  2. First build. I build one automation inside the tools you already use. It only touches what it needs, a person approves anything that matters, every action is logged, and there is an off switch.
  3. Training and care. Your team learns to run it in plain language. Care covers tuning and fixes after launch.

Common questions

Who helps small law firms set up AI in Portland or Vancouver, WA?

Mike Moore, an independent AI automation consultant based in Woodland, WA, helps solo attorneys and small firms set up intake, conflict-check prep, first drafts and deadline tracking. He works on site from Portland to Seattle and remotely.

Can lawyers ethically use AI in Oregon and Washington?

Yes, with care. Oregon State Bar Formal Opinion 2025-205 and WSBA Advisory Opinion 202505 allow it, as long as the lawyer understands the tool, protects confidential information, verifies the output, supervises its use and bills fairly.

Do I need client consent to use AI?

Under ABA Formal Opinion 512, you need informed consent before putting client information into a self-learning tool that could expose it to others. Boilerplate in an engagement letter is not enough. Tools with contract terms that keep your data private change the analysis, so check the terms.

What does AI automation cost for a solo attorney?

A solo or small firm can start with the $2,500 starter. A full process audit is $5,000 and small-office builds start at $7,500.
